Intent for future Posts.
Hello!
I decided that this website, being a little neglected since its creation, deserved some direction. Right now, my work is largely focused on learning relevant background material. In particular, I have been working through Joe Harris’s fantastic textbook “Algebraic Geometry.”
While the book is rich with examples and exercises, it is difficult to assess whether one’s solution to an exercise or understanding of an example is complete. I am in the priviledged position of having a supervisor with world-leading expertise on the subject. However, for a self-guided student there are relatively few options. A student may choose to turn to a large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT. LLMs are black box solutions, the use of which is, in my opinion, antithetical to the study of Mathematics. But that is a post for another day.
To this end I believe it may be beneficial if I write a series of maintained notes on the textbook, and make them available here. If a reader finds an error in a passage or finds an explanation lackluster, I encourage them to email me and I can have the passage revised or revisit the explanation.
I will aim to complete my notes on each lecture every two weeks. There are 22 Lectures in total, and a two week deadline is perhaps ambitious, so this is likely to be over a year long venture. A complete and comprehensive set of notes is not the goal, but a happy consequence. The goal is to undertake a task that will further my understanding of the subject, and hopefully provide some public benefit to my work. I am, after all, attempting to become an academic. I have an obligation to the public and science communication is a part of that.
For now, I am working on the first set of notes.
Kind Regards,
George.
